"Let a man be careful how he builds..." — a ministry built to last, one family at a time.

DEACON MINISTRY

The Deacon Ministry at First Baptist Church Sevierville exists to serve, support, and strengthen the body of Christ. Our deacons are servant-leaders who care for families, encourage spiritual growth, and help meet practical needs within our church.

This ministry is built on the biblical model of faithful men who come alongside pastors and members to ensure that the church remains unified, cared for, and supported.

Our Scriptural Foundation

Three passages shape how deacons are chosen and how they serve at FBC Sevierville.

Serving the Body

Acts 6:1–7

The early church appointed godly men to ensure practical needs were met, so the apostles could devote themselves to prayer and the ministry of the Word — the foundation of the deacon's role as servant and caretaker of the church family.

Character and Calling

1 Timothy 3:8–13

Paul outlines the qualifications for deacons: dignity, integrity, spiritual maturity, faithfulness at home, and a life marked by Christlike character. These qualities guide our selection and affirmation of deacon leadership.

Partners in Ministry

Philippians 1:1

Deacons are recognized as an established office within the local church, serving alongside pastors and elders to support the mission of the gospel.

The Family Ministry Plan

The Family Ministry Plan is how the Deacon Ministry ensures that every member family is personally cared for throughout the year — providing structure, clarity, and intentionality so that no one in our church walks alone through seasons of joy, growth, hardship, or need.

Why We Use the Family Ministry Plan

The early church modeled intentional care. In Acts 6, godly men were appointed to ensure that practical needs were met and that no one was overlooked. Today, our deacons continue that pattern by serving families with Christlike compassion and steady presence.

This plan helps us:

  • Strengthen unity within the church
  • Provide consistent pastoral support
  • Ensure no family is forgotten or overlooked
  • Build meaningful relationships between deacons and members
  • Respond quickly to needs, crises, and prayer requests
  • Encourage spiritual growth through discipleship and connection

How the Plan Works

Every Family Is Assigned a Deacon

Each member household is paired with a deacon based on the first letter of their last name. Families are divided as evenly as possible among our deacon body. Assignments run annually from October 1 through September 30.

This ensures every family has a designated shepherd who prays for them regularly, checks in throughout the year, offers encouragement and support, helps connect them to ministries and resources, and walks with them through illness, crisis, or grief.

What Your Deacon Does

Your assigned deacon is committed to:

  • Praying for you and your family
  • Checking in periodically throughout the year
  • Encouraging you in your walk with Christ
  • Supporting you during illness, hospitalization, or crisis
  • Celebrating milestones and answered prayers
  • Connecting you to ministries, groups, and resources
  • Serving you with Christlike humility and compassion

Deacons are not replacing pastors — they are ministry partners, helping ensure that every member receives personal care.
