The Disciples in the Upper Room
Mark 14 records one of the most important moments in history. It happened in an upper room in Jerusalem on Thursday night – the night before Jesus went to the cross. Jesus gathered His twelve disciples to celebrate the Passover meal. They had no idea they were about to participate in something that would be remembered and reenacted by billions of people for thousands of years. Our passage opens not in light, but in shadow.
Matthew tells us Judas sold out Jesus for 30 pieces of silver - the price of a slave. Judas sold out the one who had called Him, taught Him, loved Him. And what’s so treacherous about that is Judas still showed up for supper! He sat at the same table. He dipped his bread in the same bowl as Jesus. He played the part – outwardly a disciple, inwardly a deceiver.
Think about Jesus in that moment. He is in control. He knows He is about to fulfill prophecy. He is following His Father’s plan down to the smallest detail. And He knows He is about to die. Please find Mark 14:10-26.
