The Desert and the Prison

There is something about a “rescue story” that we just can’t resist. Whether it is castaways at sea who are finally found, or miners trapped in a cave-in who are finally reached by tunneling down, there is just something about a story like that that we love to hear. We think of what could have happened to the victim if someone had not helped. We think of the rescuers and we call them heroes.

You could say that the entire story of Scripture is a rescue story: humanity trapped in sin, facing certain death, with no way to get ourselves out of the mess we had made – and then our Hero, the Lord Jesus, comes and rescues us by laying down His life for ours!

In Psalm 107, we find a set of rescue stories that should inspire us to give thanks to our Great Rescuer. Let's look at Verses 1-16.
