Saturday: They Sealed the Tomb

Mar 28, 2021    Pastor Dan Spencer

In this session, we will be discussing Saturday, the Sabbath for the Jews. When we talk about Passion Week, we spend most of our time on Friday and Sunday, probably the two most studied days in history – and with good reason: We probably have more Biblical information about Friday than any other single day in the Bible.

If it wasn’t for what happened on Friday, we wouldn’t be here today! Because on Friday Jesus carried His cross to Golgotha, and took our sins upon Himself, and He died as our substitute. If it wasn’t for Friday, we would have no hope, no chance, no salvation – we would be forever lost.

And Sunday – that is the day Jesus rose from the dead, a day we celebrate like no other! It is the most death-defying, grave-defeating, fear-destroying, hope-inspiring day in the history of the world! So Christians get excited about Sunday, celebrating the resurrection of Jesus.

Friday’s cross, Sunday’s empty tomb: we preach and sing and teach and rejoice about what happened on Friday and Sunday – but we skip over Saturday. In fact, the other days have names: Good Friday, Maundy Thursday, Easter Sunday, even Spy Wednesday. But what do you call Saturday, the day between death and resurrection?
Maybe “Silent Saturday”, because in Scripture, Jesus doesn’t speak on that day, God doesn’t send any miracles on that day, the apostles don’t preach on that day, the stone doesn’t move on that day – nothing but silence on Saturday.
