The Passover
In this session, we are looking at one of the most important sections of the Bible: the final plague of the 10 plagues of Egypt, which set up the Passover. Here comes the final, tragic plague of the death of the firstborn. It would be absolutely devastating for families, just in terms of the loss and grief involved. Totally tragic. Heartbreaking. Horrible.
But added to that is the fact that in ancient cultures, the first-born son was the key to inheritance laws, land ownership, and other rights. The death of first-born sons would create chaos in Egypt for many years to come. Royal succession in Egypt was based on the first-born son. The son of Pharaoh was considered to be a god. In their religion, he would be called upon to take the throne and ensure balance in the universe.
Because they had enslaved the people of Israel and would not let them go, among the Egyptians there would be unprecedented grief and sorrow that night. But for those who obeyed the Lord, the Israelites, there would be such a calm and peace.
Let's look at Exodus 11:1-12:32.
