The Golden Calf
We have walked with the Israelites through the Red Sea as the Lord delivered them with the greatest miracle of the Old Testament. And we have stood on the mountain with Moses as the Lord thundered out His Law. That is where we find Moses in Chapter 32 when something happens that he never saw coming. It’s one of the most important chapters in the Bible.
Back in Chapter 24, the people agreed to the Law God was giving them, the Ten Commandments. They said, “All the words the Lord has said, we will do.” It was a strong commitment. But now, only a few weeks later, when they get impatient, when Moses isn’t back yet – they get antsy and violate the first commandment. It was a quick pivot from “Lord, we will do whatever you say” to “Forget what the Lord says, we will do whatever we want.”
How quickly we can turn from the commitments we have made to the Lord when we get impatient and doubt His love.
